Meet the Vision Blonde Owner Lauren Robertson, who's salon has Melbourne Blondes rejoicing. Opening in 2016, she's taken blondes to the next level, opening a salon dedicated to Blondes and Balayage only. So If you're a brunette, wanting to go lighter, or a blonde wanting to go blonder, Vision Blonde is the place for you.
I sat down with Lauren last week and asked her a little bit about her career, being a business owner and a total #girlboss.
Thanks so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to have a chat with me,
being a hairdresser yourself; how long have you been in the industry and tell us a bit about where your career started?
I have been in the hairdressing industry for over 10 years. I started my apprenticeship as a 20 year old. After completing high-school, I studied event management and decided that it wasn't for me, thats when I began my apprenticeship at a salon in Melbourne's Inner Suburbs.
What inspired you to open a salon dedicated to specialising in blonde hair?
I left the industry not long after I completed my apprenticeship. I moved across the country to Perth, after meeting my now husband on a girls trip to Mexico.
I found it so hard to find a hairdresser that could achieve what I wanted. I jumped from salon to salon, hairdresser to hairdresser and realised there was a real "niche" within the industry to create the perfect blonde.
On return to Melbourne, with this idea in mind, I decided to open a salon, dedicated to Blonde's Only. We truely only specialising in that, and doing it, day in, day out.
How hard was it to find the perfect team of Blonde Specialists?
Finding staff in general is very hard, especially staff with a good work ethic.
We always look for people with the right attitude, hard working and most of all, know their blondes!! When staff join Vision Blonde, we train them with our own signature Vision Blonde colour techniques, so each guest receives a customised service.
You recently travelled to LA and New York, working along side some of the best blonde and balayage specialists, tell me a little bit about that experience?
Its key to success to educate yourself and also your team on the latest trends and techniques. I decided to travel to America and work along side some amazing hair artists, including Ryan Weeden from Masters of Balayage.
Being a business owner; and not working on the salon floor doing hair, whats the best advice you can give someone wanting to start up their own salon?
When I first opened the salon, I worked in the salon during the day, as the basin hand and then at night worked at my full time job in health and safety. I soon learnt I needed to be 100% in the business to guide employees with my vision. I have been able to take a step back and really work on developing the team, the salon and the business, but it takes the right support and employees to be able to do it.
Your salon uses Olaplex on every guest that visits. What sets this must have service apart from having a colour service not using Olaplex?
Most of our clients that come into the salon are Colour Corrections. Olaplex allows us to maintain the integrity of the clients hair and minimise the damage that can occur with the lightening process, especially on someone with a lot of colour build up.
What do you think is the next trend in Blondes coming this Spring/Summer?
I am loving all the pastel colours right now. Soft pinks and rose gold tones are always on trend. Some natural highlights and dimensional blondes are always a hit but there is nothing better than a clean platinum blonde!
